Hangzhou is located about 180 kilometers of Shanghai and close to the borders of the Qiantang river. Throughout Hangzhou's history it has been considered the most beautiful city of China. The famous Italian traveller Marco Polo claimed : "Hangzhou is so beautiful and magnificent as a celestial city." In addition, there is a Chinese saying that says : "The paradise is in the sky and on Earth we have Suzhou and Hangzhou".
Hangzhou has a long history. During the Song Dynasty, Hangzhou was the capital of the country. Later it was replaced by the present capital of Beijing. In Hangzhou the construction of the Great Channel started. It served mainly to connect the rich region of the south with the capital in the north. Nowadays only half of its passage is navigable, and the part to the south of the Amarillo River is only for tourism purposes. Hangzhou food is very famous by its gentleness and smoothness, some of the famous plates are a bittersweet fish of the West Lake, the fishsoup Songsao and the meat of Dongpo. |
